A most outstanding day for my boy

Post by Danibeth »

Some tasty grouse

Weather called for 70% chance of rain but it didn't end up being that rainy today, thankfully

Thankfully because we went for a walk up a couple of different canyons, looking for pheasant, huns, chukars and the stray quail. We did get one quail. And a pair of pheasants.

At the top, picking up one of those wily devils

Image

And on his way down to deliver said devil

Image

While we sat for a bit to take a drink and relax and get pictures of course

Image

We had a long walk down

At the bottom we got into some cover that had a couple of pheasants. I shot one and youda thought that it was a dead pheasant. But them being wily devils, he got up and started running, with Drake hard on his heels. But this was his first pheasant that ran and so he got outsmarted a bit at first. Ultimately though, Drake won. He tracked that wily devil down. But then it took three of us, dog diving into the bushes trying to get at the bird and Steve and I pulling vines out of the way so that he could dive down deeper into the vines. But finally he came out victorious with his prize.

And for all you hotspotters out there, here's a really good clue as to where we were hunting

It was a very good afternoon for my boy indeed...I'm very proud of what he's learned today

Harlan County, East Kentucky ?
If so thats a long way from Washington.
On reflection that can't be East Kentucky, not enough trees.

Great pictures again and well done for the dog picking a difficult runner.
Pheasants are better runners than flyers and a lightly pricked bird can cover an amazing amount of ground in a short time.
Did you see any hens, or is it cocks only there ?

Thanks y'all.

We see hens and cocks out here. Nearby there is a pheasant release preserve where they only put out cock birds but we're seeing about half and half hens/cocks on the "wild" lands. My understanding is the preserve birds don't last long anyway, since they are often found sitting out on the side of the road waiting for the bus to pick them back up.

Barry, I got an edumacation yesterday in windmills vs turbines. Windmills pump water. Turbines generate electricity. However, they can get very loud. When the wind really starts going and the whole field of turbines are going as well, you can hear them all the way down in the canyon. It's a deep windy noise. They're pretty impressive ....each blade is 129 ft long. In the winter you can hunt around them but they require you stay 1000 yards from any turbine because of the ability for them to sling ice a looooooooooooooong way.
