ST Marks NWR - 15 Mar 2015

Post by Terrier »

Fished the refuge from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. water is tannin stained but warm, as was the day. Activity on Long Bar was steady to very active with trout - ended up with 21 trout, including 2 at 21", 1 at 20", some upper slots around 18" - 19". Only a few were under slot - may 1 or 2 just under. I lost about 6 or 7 at my feet, or to poor hook sets. At least 10 trout came on top water - a white gartside gurgler. The rest came on pearl/green or gold/green polarflash clouser type flies. A few pics:

That is an awesome report! "Long Bar": I'm not sure exactly which one that is, but I'm sure I hit it many times while learning the water down there. PA congrats on the new boat, and hope you have a great trip on the water. I learned a new fly fishing term that made me laugh, "slinging the buggy whip." I'm going out two days this week with the kids. I'm hoping some pelagic fish are back in the area.
