SGI - 18 Apr 2015

Post by Terrier »

Made the first trip of the year to St George Island - fished from 9:00AM to 4:30PM. Cloudy all day but no rain except for a few drops crossing the bridge. Tried the gulf first to see if I could find a pompano but no dice - I did get a small whiting. Next went over to the Youth Camp Boat Ramp. Many of the good wading spots are off limits due to bird nesting, so I went over to Rattlesnake cove but with a low tide and dirty water couldn't get anything. Picked up ladyfish at the ramp on a gartside gurgler but the water was off color and silty. Walked north toward Goose Island and found clear water around an oyster bar and sand beach. Picked up a 24" redfish on a gartside gurgler. The hit came while I was walking toward the bar just trailing the fly line behind me - my back was to the fish and I never saw the strike. Next I got a stout 23" trout - this fish fought harder than any trout I've ever caught; it was all shoulders and belly. Soon after, I picked up a 23" redfish on an olive/charteuse barred orange cowen's coyote. A 14" trout on a clouser closed the action at this spot. I picked up a large ladyfish back at Rattlesnake cove, but nothing else. There was some bait in the water, especially lots of rain minnows.

Great report! You know you're good when you can hook them behind your back. :D

I think Golds Gym - that thing fought so well I thought is was a redfish - then when I saw it was a trout, I thought it had to be well above 25". I couldn't believe it was just 23'
