6/11 report - pilot whale spotted

Post by tallykenj »

A buddy and I had a good day. Started early and hit an oyster bed just before high tide. Didnt find anyone home so we moved out east of the lighthouse. Started slamming reds but of the more than dozen caught, none were keepers. Decided to move out to about 4' and found some clear water along with many trout in the 13" to 16" range. Threw a few in the cooler and headed to some rocks in 7' but only found small black bass; too small for the cooler. Headed over to west sandbar for a few minutes and called it a day as the current died. The coolest thing of all was that I spotted one, maybe two, pilot whales in the channel between the lighthouse and bird rack. No doubt they were pilot whales! Has anyone else seen these around St. Marks?

I saw some kind of whale out west of the river in front of Wakulla Beach last fall. It was in only a few feet of water, which was surprising. Never could figure out what kind of whale it was.

I saw some a year or two ago on the west flats. I only saw them come up once and they were a lot bigger than dolphins.

Don't know if I've come across one around here...but over the years I have seen enough strange big things in the water to think I have seen one.

About thirty years ago I was driving on cape san blas beach and was wondering why all these large logs were washed up...until i saw one log with teeth...they were beached pilot whales.

Is the limit 1 per person per day? How about vessel limit?

Also, legal to take with rod & reel? Kayaks OK?

Cook in giant pit over coals for a week? Recipes?

You could go with the traditional Italian Dressing marinade. Costco sells it in the convenient 55 gallon drum size (4 pack).
