Aucills River question

Post by Redbelly »

Does the Aucilla go under ground at some point and re-emerge?

Has anybody been fishing it above the 98 bridges? Pitching crickets?

Yes it goes underground a couple times. Don't know much about pitching crickets north of 98 but that has worked in any other river I've ever fished, around here at least.

The Aucilla is supposed to be very good for bream.

I sometimes wonder if I should ramble on like this about the secrets but here goes (I'm so bored lol!). The main Aucilla River goes underground once. It then reemerges several times through some sinkholes until it comes back at 98. It also has some sinkholes above where it first rises to form the actual riverbed.

The Aucilla River is good for EVERYTHING and it's tons of fun. Parts of it aren't for the weak of heart but I love it from top to bottom. I've been up and down it my whole life.

Like...40 yards maybe lol! That shouldn't stop you though. Freshwater fish are plentiful all the way down past Mandalay. If you were set on paddling you can also paddle up any of the many sloughs, including 1 that connects to the Wacissa which basically means you could paddle all you wanted before stopping (I've often gotten mad setting out on enormous paddling trips only to find dead ends in very little time lol).

As for pitching crickets, 98 isn't blackwater/bream/cricket pitching country though. I mean sure you will obviously catch some bream with crickets but it's not like the upper blackwater, narrow cricket pitching heaven. Worms on the bottom usually do a little better or even small lures which brings me to the good news. The fishing is a little easier down there. They'll chase a lure for sure unlike the bream way upriver. Somebody will now want to chime in about how they've caught them upriver with lures lol as have I but it took practice, and on days where the fish just aren't feeling it live bait is the only way to go. Also the fish are way more skiddish upriver. If you tip over your worm can every fish within a radius of 48 miles runs lol!

Is the only other access point in Lloyd?

O gosh no. There are tons of legal access points (and I'm assuming you meant Lamont or got autocorrected or something) from Lamont to 98, and some above Lamont but I don't recommend fishing up that way at first lol!

I want to go fishing more than I want to have sssssssssssssssseven pieces of chocolate cake. Did you ever go? I bet you got sabotaged by the weather Thursday and Friday. That should be the last of that type of weather though.

Every year before I start fishing I load up the chainsaw, chain etc and go do anything that needs to be done on the roads going to a few of my secret spots that always have a tree down or something. There was actually no work to be done so far but only because they put 1 of those blasted giant dirt mounds up to block 1 of my favorite spots. It was already eroding though and I bet it will be mere road fill by the end of summer. I did catch 1 fish, on what was technically my first cast of the season lol! It was a hand size Blue Bream on a broke back Rapala. There was some popping going on along the edges of the sinkhole to so apparently those fish weren't put off by the cool and wind.
