Key West Tips ???

Post by dbplug »

I believe some of you have been to KW. I have a 5 day conference beginning on Sunday at the Key West Wyndham on the SE shore of Key West. I have a offshore party boat reservation for Monday. They say you will catch Grouper, yellowtail, Snapper.

I have also been told to visit Bahia Honda, will do.

Lastly I have been told that I can fish off of the hotle dock early in the AM and in the evening for Gray Snapper and other species.

4 Questions:

Chalkster, yellow or pink sundress?
what is a yellowtail?
Will my sureketch and FB's work at Bahia Honda?
Is Gray snapper worth the trouble?

No dress or clothing ----It's the Keys :-D
Yellowtail is a snapper..thick as bream down there
Most of my tackle caught fish down there.....Bahia is nice..There are only about 100 miles of bridges to fish off of.....
Gray snapper = fish...Don't you like to fish?

Take your boat or you will regret it....

Lucky dog award goes to db.....

yellow tail is a member of the snapper family, excellent table fair. Can be caught off the bottom but most of my experience has been flat line'n for them. Very small hook, small piece of squid or a piece of mullet gizzard
Image

Gray snapper or mangrove also good eating but can be a challenge to catch. Living around docks...can become very wary to taking bait.

Chalk's skin tones goes much better with the yellow so I'd say be your own judge on which color you choose :D

Your sureketch/FB's should work but so will a lot of other artificals and cut baits.

Have a ball.... :-D
"Good Judgement" comes from experience, ... and a lot of that..... results from "Bad Judgement".

Unless that caddy I rented has a trailer hitch on it I am SOL on the boat.

SR, thanks very much for the pics. The Grey looks like a Mangrove.

Thinking turquoise on the sundress and a red wig.

My only advice would be to have someone to carry your bags. What are the dates again...I'll see if I can free up my schedule :-D

DB, you can take MJ's suggestion if you want, but Chalk looks much better in the white 4" heels with matching clutch. But he also uses a blonde wig.
What was I supposed to do today?

I have been to Key West many times. Enjoy your party boat reservation, you will likely catch some fish. Go on a sunset cruise on a sailing vessel out of the harbor, or at least visit the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square. Be ready for rather offbeat people and things, but have fun with it. There will be weirdos in ragged outfits, girls (and boys) in spandex, t-tops, and bikinis plus lots of people having a few drinks, starting in the morning or anytime. Gays are welcome in Key West, so don't be surprised by open behavior. Walk if you can in the old town area, don't drive. Have a hamburger at Jimmy Buffet's, a Corona with lime at the Ocean Key House dock, and watch the tarpon under the lights at night. Have a drink at Sloppy Joe's, visit Hemmingway's House and see the cats.

If you have the time, an absolutely WONDERFUL morning or afternoon (or all day) can be spent taking a float plane trip to the Dry Tortugas.

This would be a trip you would always remember. Take some snorkeling gear (and a rod and reel if you can, fish off the dock at the main island) and a lunch, plus your camera. The visual as you come in for a landing at Fort Jefferson is staggering. You are treated to the largest brick Civil War Fort in the U.S., plus crystal clear water and coral reefs like we used to have it in the keys in the olden days. Visit the fort, swim alongside the seawalls, and cast off the dock for nice mangrove snapper.

It is a stunning trip to the Tortugas, and it ain't that expensive.

Luck,

EJ

P.S.

Almost forgot. The only true bargain in Key West is sandals at Kino's, a little cuban sandal factory in the downtown area. Ask for directions, the sandals are $5-10, and handmade by the cuban girls.

Okay DB, you might have already seen this WebCam site.
http://webcam.keywest.com/

If you want to cut the chase and go directly to the Sloppy Joe stage cam-
http://www.sloppyjoes.com/sloppycam/streamcam.htm
or the Hogs Breath Saloon-
http://www.hogsbreath.com/hogcam/stagecam.cfm

The streaming video works best, if you have a broadband connection and a hotrod computer, but dialup and your average HP/Dell/etc will work.
The show is just starting.. I mean get yor self a beer, and it's almost like being there.
Send the kids to bed, though, the language gets a little racy.

As always, it's okay to mix a little 'binness' with pleasure- have fun..

Thanks folks for the tips. I am really, REALLY looking forward to this. Will post reports and pics upon my return.

I have decided on a big flowery print mumu, red cat eye glasses, a straw hat, and a platinum blonde wig. Should at least be the hit on the party boat. EJ, thanks for the info, and thanks for the links qoutrage.

Maybe I will post a time for you guys to check the webcam and wave to you guys in front of the hogs breath stage with my mumu on, and a sign that says "CHALK will you marry me?

Just a note on the Sloppy Joe stage show- I have known about these
cams for a couple of years and had them bookmarked, but have always
thought about checking them, during the wee hours of the morning or
during the day (bored). Mostly, nothing ever going on at those times.
I actually watch the stage show for about 30 mins last night after posting
the site URL here. All I can say is- Don't go there, if you are offended
by heavy profanity. It's worst than I thought, rating up there with R.
Pryor in just 'how vulgar can ya be?'.
One thing for sure, you won't find any fishing tips there.

DB, again, enjoy your trip- And, with all that fishing gear and wardrobe
packing, don't forget your briefcase..
