Just curious -- how do y'all make sure the flounder is 14" before you hit 'em with the gig? Seems like throwing back a gigged flounder would just be feeding the crabs.

Lots of practice, look for the v in the back where to two loins come together. If they don’t have that defined dip there’s a good chance it’s a short. If wading use your foot for a reference.

My gig was 6” across so it was easy to figure it out. Most of the “barely” legal ones were always 13”. The 13” fish only made up 5-10% of the catch. Most fish were 15-16”.
