Re: This ain’t good..
It’s not surprising. The regulators have a habit underestimating fish in the water and overestimating fish catch rates.

As usual the the commercial side wont be bothered just the poor ole guy that wants to spend the day on the water and take a couple home to eat will be the one that suffers.
Re: This ain’t good..
I spoke with my friend who attends these meetings. He said the Fed's are recalculating and reassessing their catch data as it is obviously flawed on the recreational side. The commercial side is within their catch quota and won't be affected.
So.....what that means to the 2024 season......to be determined.

Sounds like some reason to hope.rockyg wrote: ↑February 5th, 2024, 2:27 pm I spoke with my friend who attends these meetings. Looks like gags will be closed for 24 even after the revised math

How I feel anytime Gulf Council shares anything…
Re: This ain’t good..
It is an absolute shame that those in charge would consider any regulation restricting the every day fishermen without some cutbacks on the commercial side if the fishery is in that much trouble then cut back on all....but remember these are the same folks that are in charge of counting the BEAR population in the state of FL also...just sayin

I'm going to try and get their dataset and run the statistics myself just to see what I come up with myself.

Re: This ain’t good..
So far they haven't even released the corrected dataset so I'm curious to see how it looks, if the sample size is as small as THT suggests it is, it's no wonder the extrapolation is so out of whack compared to the fl numbers.

Looking at the graph, the 23 estimate before rerunning the model has a spread of 1.5 million lbs between the 95% confidence levels which tells me their model has very little data put into it and a lot of generation from limited inputs.

Re: This ain’t good..
Preliminary look at the data, we are being penalized for reporting out of season and short grouper. This dataset is embarrassing to even work with. I would be embarrassed to even use it in a publication.
