Winter Garden???

Post by Juan »

Anyone plant a winter garden? I'm trying to figure out what to plant that will grow during the winter in this area... so far I've got: collards, turnips, lettuce and cabbage planted... thinking about adding some beets, onions and carrots but not sure winter is the right time for those... Any suggestions?

Juan, you are on the right track. Your greens will do well. Go to: dixondale.com for your onion plants. It is a little early yet. Need to transplant your plants in November before Thanksgiving. Be sure to buy the Short Day variety. If you are really interested I could help you on the onions. I've grown beets and carrots but with mixed success. Any of your cabbage family of greens will work from now to Christmas. English peas also works.

Good luck. I like gardening. Picked me a mess of snap beans today and they were so good. Everything is better in the fall. Yellow squash will be coming in soon and some late peanuts.

I plant collards, mustards, cabbage, broccoli and onions. Onions aren't ready until just before Spring. You need to get your greens in the ground now if you want to eat some on turkey day. I've planted from sets and seed. Greens are the only thing I'll buy as seed and plant.

Hello everyone,

First of all, I'd like to apologize for bringing up a topic from a long time ago, but in reading this discussion, I really recognized myself in the exchanges you had back then. It made me want to delve deeper into the subject and start a winter garden.

I'm still a beginner, and I'm doing it in my spare time, but I think that with your advice and experience, it could not only help me progress, but also enrich the exchanges between us all.

I'd be curious to know if any of you who are still active here have any tips or feedback to share. For example, what key steps would you recommend for successfully growing a winter garden? Are there any common pitfalls I should avoid, especially as a beginner? And also, do vegetables like onions, cabbage, or carrots require specific care to grow well in winter?

And last question, do you have any recommendations for finding reliable resources, especially for seedlings or seeds? I saw dixondale.com mentioned, but the link seems dead now.

I figure following in the footsteps of those already in it could be a really rewarding experience. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to share their know-how or experience!

I look forward to reading your responses and chatting with you.
