…like only I can give. I am so mad at how foolish I was today. I swore I’d never go anywhere where there was ever a mullet, ever again, without worms ever since I paddled up on a million mullet in a certain remote canal a few years ago.
I had 1 thing of mullet chum left that had been sitting and I took it today and threw it into the Aucilla just so it wouldn’t waste and for the ride. I usually have to quit fishing around late August because I’m a pecan farmer but I have no pecans this year. I also figured most mullet had went on to the oceans. So I threw the chum out and drove over to the St Marks and Wakulla bridges and there were mullet at both of them, plus big bass and sheepheads
Took a shot at the with the little castnet and that didn’t work out so I went back to the Aucilla. I didn’t even plan on going back to check the chum originally but after I saw those other mullet I had to. I got back and there were, and I swear to gosh, atleast 40 ENORMOUS mullet. I thought they were carp they were so big. I happened to have some old bread in the truck and they weren’t interested in it. The only thing left to do was try the castnet. I hit the target but they scattered so fast it was like a cartoon. Poof they were gone and they never came back. If I would have had worms…dang dang dang. I’m going to try Goose Pasture tomorrow where you don’t really need chum instead of buying a whole new bag that might not get used. Plus after I spooked the Aucilla mullet so bad they might not come back the next day. I’d been catching them at Goose all summer. Never really caught a whole bucket full but caught some every time I went except for the first time.

Goose Pasture didn’t work out at all. You could about walk on the grass. There were plenty of mullet but being between the grass at the top of the water they were barely even wet and they spooked easy.
I went back to the Aucilla and caught 4 nice ones at low tide over what was left of yesterday’s chum. I didn’t see the whole motherload of mullet but enough to catch 4, at low tide even. For there to be enough to catch 4 at low tide means there were probably more at high tide this morning. I should have went straight back but I thought they would need more than 12 hours to come back after being spooked.
Went Saturday to Aucilla with my son. Started at about 8:00 and fished the incoming tide. Fished 7-8 feet, water temp was about 84. Caught 7 trout and 10 rock bass all on artifical-combo of z-manns and gulps. Had one trout about 20 inches. Bite was good early then slowed about 10:00. Headed in towards Cobb as the tide came in and caught 1 nice red. Called it a day about 2:00. Handful of boats out fishing, seas were perfect, and not so dang hot. Great day on the water
I went back today and did well. They showed up on time but didn’t really start swarming until just before dark. I lost a bunch because I got a little anxious over them starting so late and I tried to manhandle them in to fast. Once they started though it was on. I think I could have kept catching them with a head light.
I hope their weird behavior doesn’t mean they’re about to leave but it’s going on October and I know the day will come. I’ve been on a diet and have been eating 1 piece of grilled mullet every night.
