Gaff Length

What is your preferred length for a grouper/snapper gaff?

A small gaff about 8" long is really all you need. You don't really need a gaff or net at all, if your partner can't get the fish to the boat.

I went with a less than 3' because it's only about a foot from the water to the topside of the Redneck and that danged 3 footer is just wasted length in it

A homemade job came with the boat. It's made from a length of 1" conduit with a some sort of 11/32" spike welded in it- Overall lenght is 41".
'Has a nice, but worn cord handle on it. Looks pretty sturdy with only a little rust on it.
It didn't break, when I took a hand sledge to straighten the hook a little.
I got it cleaned up and sharpened in the event it's ever needed.

We land all fish with landing nets, apart from common skate, we use a tarpaulin for those.

Some of the diameter and length of the nets, has to be seen to be believed.

3' for snapper/grouper since they tend to come up right under the boat. 8' for those kings /cobia that like to circle the boat just out of reach of that 4' gaff
