The V-MAX just means a 20" shaft. All Yamahas are conditioned for saltwater. All of the research I did prior to purchase had good things to say about the V-MAX. They also look pretty good.
I would watch out for hurricane damaged boats. There are many of them for sale right now, and the owners are not always out-coming with this info. I went up north to buy mine just to make sure.
No rod holders on the gunnel...this is true. My pathfinder has the optional railing on the gunnel, and rod holder mounts are clamped to this railing with screw in rod holders. Unfortunately it looks like some kind of catfish rig, but should work for trolling etc.

Have you looked at the Blazer Bay? There are a couple of models that you could get into for $25K or less.
