April 10 - Grouper and First Aid

Post by d-tox »

Nice to be back fishing again. Now keeping the boat in the water at Shields since we were evicted at Bayside.

Left around 10ish on Sunday. Out 22 miles SE of St. Marks safe water bouy. Two and threes going out, but the water was beautiful. Water temperature about 76 degrees. :-)

Second drop was a keper gag. Roland followed with one, but then the bite died off. Then my equipment turned on me and I had the worst birds nest in my reel. Lost almost a full spool of 30# PowerPro. Worst of all...I was trying to cut out the tangle with a knife and a wave struck at the wrong time. I lost a sizeable portion of the tip of my left thumb and thumbnail

Cussed some, stopped the bleeding and moved to another number and the bite was back on. Fished the rest of the day. Lots of shorts and some freight trains that couldn't be stopped. Parted 50# PowerPro like it was sewing thread. Roland even caught a sea turtle. :smt005

The gags hit LYs, and squid, but the best bait of the day was cut grunts. Roland landed the largest fish of the day using a grung head.

Anyway, kept three gags and had a fair day on the water. Went to Patients First and they fixed the thumb. It will take close to a year for the chunk of my thumb to grow back, but they say it will.

That brings me to the "First Aid" part of my post. I know we all check our flares and safety equipment regularly. But have you checked your first aid kit out recently? Now would be a good time. I recommend more than just checking to see if the kit is present. Open it up and check the contents inside. Let me tell you that gauze is hard to cut with a filet knife. And band aids dry out after a few years. Antibiotic cream also gets hard after a few years on the boat. A few minutes now could save you from a serious problem in the future.

Nice to be back posting again.

d-tox, anywhichway you put it, 911 is a long ways off when fishing.
Good advice.

D-tox good report and good idea about the First Aid kits. I always carry one but, found out the hard way as you mentioned that the contents do have a shelf life. It involved a semi green cobia and a hook buried in my index finger. Don't worry the cobia snatched it out for me :o

Good post and thanks for reminding us on the first aid kit. 'West' has their 200 Medical Kit on sale for 19.99 (if they have them in stock).
