I haven't posted in a while so I figured I'd report on yesterday.

My dad came down from Alabama so I took him and my youngest son out for some groupering. Left the fort at about 6:45. Went out past the lighthouse and stopped to catch bait. While me and Dad caught about 3 dozen pinfish, the 5 year old was casting a jig and caught a 17" trout. (The boy's a natural. :) )

Then we headed south to about 45 feet. We only caught a few shorts bottom fishing the grunts weren't biting too bad. Hit a couple of other holes with the same results, so we decided to troll for a while. Caught a 24" gag and broke off something BIG. After a couple of hours we went back and bottom fished a couple of places I marked while trolling, but only picked up a couple of shorts (plus the 10-12 grunts that the boy boated) so we decided to head towards home. On the way in I made one last stop in about 30 feet of water and as soon as our bait hit the bottom the bite was on. We boated six more keepers from 23" to 32" and probably another 10 that was less than 1" from making the cut. They seemed to prefer live bait, but after we ran out they kept hitting LY's and cut bait. Somewhere during all this Dad pulled up a nurse shark about 6 or 7 feet long.

The wind had gotten up while the fish were biting, and the ride in was very rough. Lost the oil pump on the starboard motor at about 7 miles south of the bird rack. Came the rest of the way in on one motor and got back to the fort at about sunset. Not the best ending, but still a good day.

Final count:
4 Reds
3 Gags
1 Trout
15 Grunts
I must fish.
