St. Marks Report 9/24

Post by juan sapatos »

Left Shields at 7:30 with my two sons. Fished the west flats starting just outside of Big Pass and drifting with the last of the outgoing tide. Caught four legal trout in about an hour and lots of shorts. Biggest was 20 inches. Slowed down at dead low tide and then picked up again when the water started moving. Ran out of bait and headed back in. One trout caught on a pinfish, the rest on live shrimp or gulp shrimp all under cajun thunder.

My older son's first "Fish" of the day took some very long, fast runs. I was thinking cobia, but it was a small sea turtle (maybe 15 lbs). Released unharmed. Never caught a sea turtle before. He was very unhappy with us. A very neat little animal, although he looked very pitiful in the landing net.

Weather was very nice. I was a little nervous about the forecast, but very light chop. East wind was picking up when we headed for the dock at 10:45.

Lots of life on the flats. All in all a beautiful, too short day on the water.
