Trolling off Dog Island 12/16/2006
I have been waiting on a day when I can take my 18 foot Key Largo offshore for a couple of weeks now. I have to pick my days because of my size (the boat) so today was the day. 1 to 2 foot seas according to NOAA. NAMAW!! They got it right.
Launched at Dockside Marine in the Carrabelle River about 8:30 am and headed out the west side of Dog Island. The seas were calm and I could hammer down all the way out to 38 feet (that is where I wanted to start). I had been reading the report that BULLFIGHTER has posted and the color test they had run on Mann’s stretch 30’s. It looked like Blue back Silver sides was the best overall color in their test.
I did not have any Blue/Silver stretch 30’s so a trip to BPS before I came down was in order (yep I’m easy).
Well I trolled the B/S for over an hour in 38 to 40 feet and not a bite. NAMAW!!! I was thinking of changing to my old standby, the Red head, White side Stretch 30 when I heard Eddie Joe in the O’Hell Michelle hail me on channel 16. I reported what was going on and EJ said he was on the way out and he was going to start in 35 feet.
I changed to the R/W and 3 minutes later I have number 1 in the box. 10 min. later #2 comes in. I hail Eddie Joe and tell him of my good luck. Kudos from EJ. (thanks Eddie)
Nothing for about 30 min. and then #3 comes in. WhaaaHooo! I’m having fun now. Hail EJ again to see how he is doing. (Slow for him).
I keep plugging along and then #4 comes in. This is getting good. I forgot to mention that a few lizard fish came to the boat (about 6) during the day. Seems like when I made a wide turn and the baits slowed down is when I would pickup one.
Now I am looking for #5. Well the fish just stopped and I could not pick up another one. 2 hours go by and nothing. Then I get a 20â€
