If the fish are in, Oh, lets say, 3 feet of water, and suspended just above the bottom, a heavier jig head will quickly take the bait to the bottom, and possibly out of sight, in the cover. If you lighten the jig head the bait will sink much slower, allowing the fish more time to see it. Or you might want to try a suspending bait, worked slow, for winter fish.

Thanks, TC. I think I get that part. I'm curious how one knows which water column to fish. What determines what column you fish - tide, species, temperature , cloud cover, water depth, etc? Is water column even important?

Try them all every time you go. I have different baits rigged all the time. Try fast, slow, deep shallow, topwater.

Mission fishin jig heads are the best lookin. You can locate them at SGO in Cairo,Ga. The come in a lot of irregular colors.
