We got us an Internet detective here. :D Father Michael doesn't know about fishing. He's from Ireland where they think carp are sportfish.

Oddly enough, noone of my family in Kentucky fished until my Dad and I took it up in the mid-1960s. Dad caught, and released, the largest bass of his life at Lake Jackson in 1990 while visiting us here.

Now that's the size you want to release back to the water  but up to around 4 pounds, they get filleted and released into some grease

Edited to bring the quote over

It is a reservoir.
Jumptrout51 wrote:Years ago, when it was the Velda Dairy farm it was a wonderful place to catch 10-12 pound bass on a regular occassion.
There are only a few of us that bass fish there on a regular basis. We still catch 7 to 9 pound bass on a fairly regular basis. When I first moved here there were a lot of lily pads that provided cover for the bass. Some geniuses on the fish and wildlife committee in Killearn Lakes thought it would be a good idea to get rid of the pads. Fishing has not been as good since.
Jumptrout51 wrote:A given body of water can maintain X pounds of fish. Do you want 2000 pounds of 1 pound bass or do you want 2000 pounds of 10 pound bass. If you are looking for quality go for the 10-12 pound fish. The stunted fish will not reproduce quality fish,if they reproduce at all.
If you kill your breeding stock, you aren't going to have any bass. If you want to keep some bass to eat, keep some of the smaller ones. The pictures that surprised me were of people keeping and eating their breeding stock.

First, Don't let GrumpyTrout51 bother you- he is our curmudgeon...

Second- a balance between catch and release and catch a fillet is good.
If I couldn't eat some of them I'd just as soon take up Golf.

Finally my wife just happened to look at this photo over my shoulder when I was reading and said "YUMMY"

I released a half dozen bass or so this evening, but fresh water fish are dirty and are merely a diversion for me until I can get back to the coast. Salt water fish dont always get a reprieve.

Keeping Bass

I don't keep any bass over 15 inches - they just don't taste good to me above that. And even then, I'll only keep a couple a month. I fish Lake Hall and I think there are too many small ones there - about 1 out of 14 bass I catch there is above 17 inches. I'd like to see a slot limit there where anything 15" - 24" had to be released.

I do catch and release of all the bass I catch in the Suwannee River - I sometimes catch those rare red-eyed "Suwannee Bass" too, which of course I release as they are on the "Species of special concern" list.

In this river, Bass fishin' is for sportin' fun as they are not the best tasting fresh water fish IMHO, so I go after red-belly perch and catfish for food fishin' ! :D
