I use 2' off a mono leader for cast and reel. Still no problems with toothy critters.

Speaking of toothy critters, I had a (fresh water) jack bite clean through 30# braid this afternoon.

I have also heard from a friend that closing the bail on spinning rods manually is a must.

For a crappy reel like a shakespear, I would agree. I had the the bail wire fall off my first shakespear. I avoid them now.
