The best reason for a VHF over just a cell phone is when you use a VHF radio, nearby boats can hear your call and provide quicker assistance than anyone you call ashore. Also, of everyone who only carries a cell phone, I wonder how many of them have the local Coast Guard phone number on their boat or programmed into the cell phone. If your boat is sinking your wife back home isn't going to be much immediate help.

I also recommend a fixed VHF radio if at all possible, they are not that expensive, have much better range, and they don't require batteries, however, we do have a fixed unit and also carry a hand held VHF radio also as back-up.
