I fished the Hemingway marlin tournament on the outskirts of Havana in 1990. We took six boats across from Key West with clearance from the State Dept. My host had political connections.

The marlin bite was slow, but the people were very friendly and it was cool seeing all the vintage cars around the city. We were able to visit Hemingway's finca (house) and saw the Pilar, his sportfishing boat as it was being restored. I also interviewed his captain, Gregorio Fuentes, who was in his 80s at the time, still drinking his rum and smoking cigars.

Cuba will be a great American tourist destination again once the Castro bros. are gone. Europe and Central America already knows that. The flats fishing on the south side is reportedly very good, and I'm sure the swordfish and marlin are making a comeback with the straits closed to longliners.
