I got hit with the same thing, without thinking I clicked it and my PC was dunzo... or so I thought.

A quick system restore set up by SpyBot Search and Destroy a week earlier and I was fine.

Ok, I have to speak up here. Statements like that one just show inexperience with A/V software. I have worked with just about everything out there, and they ALL have issues. NOD32 is fine, but I have removed nasty things from NOD32 PC's also. AVG is a very good program, especially for home users since they can use it free. There are several good ones, but I have seen viruses slip past all of them.

There several issues I see daily with antivirus software.

One is not updating properly. I can not tell you how many times I have removed a virus that had a/v software that had not been updated in 6 months.

Another is NEW viruses. Even the best software will not detect a new variant or totally new virus. That is like telling you what the part number will be on a 2015 Yamaha 90 fuel pump.

Third is just stupidity. Clicking on a link even after the A/V has warned you is more common that you think.

The fourth one is e-mail scanning setup. Many times, I see folks setup the e-mail scanner for Outlook, yet use Outlook Express or vice versa. Some programs have to be set to scan the proper e-mail programs. And the e-mail scanner does NOT check e-mails from web e-mails like Yahoo e-mail. The resident scanner has that task.

Lastly, if you depend soley on A/V software to keep a financial network from being hacked, you need to look into some good enterprise stuff like Cisco's products. Else, you are doomed to more hacking in the future.

Another idea is using blacklists and whitelists. These either allow or disallow sites. I have on my machine a blacklist in my hosts file. I rareley see any ads, just blank areas where the ads were supposed to be. You can get more info and the file here:

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Here is another perspective on A/V software. One that even says it is a waste of time....

http://www.zdnet.com.au/news/security/s ... 122,00.htm?

Not giving any suggestions, just trying to educate on ideas to use. After all, it is a never ending game with the hackers...well, the BAD hackers.... :-D

Dubble-You are right. All a/v have problems. We just chose Nod32 because of the admin console and it allows us to have better control of the users on an admin basis and seems to be the lesser of all evils. We've have better luck with support and updates as well. When you are supporting 600+ users, anything that makes it easier is good. The free version of AVG is great for home users but we've heard many complaints of the update server being down frequently.

We do think the virus that hacked our system was brought in do to carelessness. And you are right, you can't defend that no matter what. We have a cisco firewall in place that's protects us from outside hackers, but that doesn't stop idiots that click on the wrong things. We also use a email scanner called PineApp that is wonderful if anyone is looking for something that protects corporate user of ms exchange.

Thanks for the info...anyone in the IT field will surely agree that you can never have too much input.

You ain't kiddin there. I learn new stuff every day...I always like to hear what others use that works...That is the way I found MalwareBytes, on a board like this that had nothing to do with computers...one hell of a removal program.

DT,
Do you believe everything reported on OAN--Obama Adoration Network?

Seriously, I know Macs are not foolproof, but I've had a fraction of the problems with it versus what I experienced on a PC.

Silverking-Do you use your Mac for graphic designing or anything similar? People that do that type of work are all I've ever heard that actually like the Mac's. I really have only had very little use of a Mac and didn't like it. But, I'm not one that likes change either.

Some one made a statement that less people use Mac so the hackers focus more of their energy on PC. Do you think there is any truth to that?

I don’t know if I have a virus or not. I went to check my account this morning and some one had withdrawn almost all of my money. I called the bank to see if there was a error with the system and they said that there was a withdrawal, and I told them that it was not authorized. I went into the bank to dispute it, filled out a bunch of paperwork and filed a police report. Hopefully it will get resolved quickly and they will catch the A- Hole that did it. I would like to get my hands on them. I have Norton 360. 3.something and it is saying there is nothing there. Where can I get Malware Bytes? I would appreciate any help.
