Start with this in mind 90% of the fish are in 10% of the water usually if you ain't catching your in the wrong place more than throwing the wrong bait.
What will catch fish can change but most seasons many baits will work. Moving water and edges as someone else said is right. It is getting where they are. Shrimp and Pinfish are great I almost never use them but they work. I love minnow type baits Bite A Bait Redfins Mirror Lure etc... I love to catch fish on them. I have a buddy that fishes a Jig & Grub well its hard to get him to fish any other way. I have caught them on every artificial bait I have ever used some more than others but all have worked. I bet a beetle spin would work but I have never tried it. Gulp Slurp and other baits with added stink make non-fisherman fair good one better and great ones even more successful. Try stuff that is off the wall Spannish Mackeral can be caught with a two inch piece of straw from a fast food place with a hook in it. I have caught fish shallow when others were fishing deep. I have caught fish deep when others were fishing mid depths. I call it listening to the fish. If what I am doing isn't working I TRY SOMETHING ELSE!!!!! What was right Tuesday may not work at all on Friday.
I agree there is no substitute for time on the water but if your not catching your in need of help. When I use a guide I watch what they are saying and try it that doesn't mean I will fish that spot but I will find other spots like it. Also after having forged a relationship with the guide I can call and get an idea of where or how to fish as the seasons change and the fish move. I also tell the guide what has been working for me as well sharing info helps. Invite others form here to fish with you or ask if you can go with them not to get thier spots but to learn how they fish.
Yesterday it was taboo today it is normal what the heck will they be doing tomorrow?
