What's going to happen when Nestle pumps more water out of the Aquifer?

1000 friends of Florida has the flow pegged at 360CFS at the headwaters. That works out to about 160,000 gal. per minute if their numbers are right. that is a little over 230,000,000 gal per day.

The citizens in McCloud California sucessfully stopped Nestle from putting a bottling plant on the McCloud river.

I am no tree hugger, but this is one of the last mostly wild little rivers in this area. I say tell them to leave that river alone!

The balance between quiet enjoyment of a public resource and economic growth is difficult.
I bet there is not a person on here that has not carried a few bottles of water with them fishing.
That water came from somewhere natural- not a factory.
And I'd feel better about drinking water from the Wakulla or Wacissa than the Hooch in Atlanta

450,000(Nestle) / 230,000,000(Normal Flow) is a about 2% of the water flow.
I'm sure the normal rise and fall of the river is greater than that.

My questions is what has happened at other springs and rivers where they are taking about that much water?

As for removing water from the aquifier, well, lets do this example:

Nestle pumps out a quart of water, and JT51 buys it at the store. Now after 50 or so oysters with hot sauce, he drinks a bottle of water. After a while, he goes out behind the house and pees on his truck wheel. The pee runs down and goes into the ground. Now a little filtering, and guess where the water winds up. Thats right, in the aquifier. Ooooohhhh, I don't know if I can drink well water again after that picture in my head.

I would be much more concerned with the noise and road damage from the trucks coming in and out all hours of the day.


As a sidenote, I think it is dumb to pay for something you can get out of your tap, but hey, I remember when folks were paying 10 bux for a pet rock....

The 230,000,000(million) gallons of water is taken from the headwaters at the springs. It doesn't take into account the other springs and tributaries that flow into the river further south. The 450,000 gallons per day works out to .19% of the daily flow and the 1,600,000 gallons per day claim works out to .69% of the daily flow. Not saying it's not an issue, things just need to be looked at in the right scale.

The census has Jefferson county at a little over 14,000 souls. What is their daily water use including municiple use?

One problem I do see is that the county will make little to no money out of the deal, which is too bad. The resource is controlled by the state( as it should be) and since there isn't going to be any sort of "plant" there won't be much tax revenue for the county. To make things right Nestle should at least build a over sized loading faciltiy building and pay some property taxes on the structure.
That being said, I bet the revenue stream will be pretty good based on the number of tickets the Sheriff will write every time one of those trucks pull out with a missing mudflap, 1 mph over the speed limit, tail light out etc.....

Miller Brewing up in Albany pulls 3,000,000. gallons of water per day out of the Claiborne aquifer and the Clayton aquifer.

Beer > bottled water

I grew up in south Georgia, and love remote places and swamps. I hate as much as anyone to see development in those kinds of places. But it really comes down to who owns the land? It should be their call. If you really don't want Nestle there, buy the land and preserve it. It's hard to own land and not get revenue from it - taxes have to be paid, etc.
