Now Blue Ridge is a haul from Helen, especially when you consider going over the mountain.

Just North is the Ocoee River were they did the Olympic white water events, might want to check that out and do a short raft trip.

If you go over the mountain toward Dahlonega or Suches, there use to be a excellent place to eat on top of the mountain. "Deer Lodge", big red rustic building, They surved up a huge steak .

Suggested routes
. 1 hour 7 mins GA-348 W/Richard B Russell Scenic Hwy and GA-2 W/GA-515 W/US-76 W
48.9 mi

Those roads are super crooked and if you get behind a slow vehicle or log truck, no where to pass.

Alrighty now :-D the wife would like to know if there are any decent RESORTS in that general area "within an hour of a montain" that would have a lake and things to do on-site that would entertain the girls "two 14yo"

If I was you, I would punt and either go toward Gatlingburg/Pigeon Forge or Cherokee.

What do they want to do?

Vogel and Unicoi State parks aren't "resorts" but do have cabins, swimming, hiking, fishing, wildlife, etc. with close proximity to various mountain towns that have shopping, dining, antiques, pottery and touristy things to do.

If you're looking for Disney type stuff, albeit rustic by comparsion, then Deanmac is correct, look towards Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge/Cherokee.

The N. Georgia mountains are more about nature, fishing, hiking, etc.

Try Blue Creek Cabins.com, between Helen and Cleveland. Cleveland being the home of the Cabbage Patch Dolls. I know, I had to take my daughter and wife there three times.
