Just curious, why a navionics gold/ platinum chip is antiquated compared to the navionics phone app. I have both and the phone app isn't even close. Way more detail on the chip. Seriously, not even close. Plus the battery life is way short if using the app as a GPS. Ive had my unit for 8 years without problems and its never gone overboard. I wouldn't have a boat without one. But that's just me.

I try to keep all bases covered as far as returning to the dock safely. I was watching "Coast Guard South Florida" and some of these guys don't have a clue about boating safety, and at the same time start out with serious problems? Then the coastees spend $60K looking for them!! I do everything in my power to prevent that C.G. chopper from hovering over my boat.... My GPS and chip are so accurate, i don't think i could see an improvement by something else. When i enter a waypoint, and return to the waypoint it is within a few feet of the same point!!

Hey nolepimp, check out page 20 of the march florida sportsman mag. Article is titled " screen sense, mobile devices offer some convenience, but they aren't ready to replace 12 volt marine systems for navigation". Hope this helps

Dude, phones die. Nuff said. You wouldn't have ended up at Live Oak if your thought process was different, right? At least get yourself a handheld GPS as a back up, especially if you are not familiar with these waters, Donk.nolegolferpimp wrote:yeah, that was really donk of me. I've been waiting for someone to say something about that lol . I've navigated before without having to use my spotlight in fog, and a new moon coming out of weird creeks and never had a problem before. I didnt intend to stay out past dusk that day either. I dont see the point of paying $500 -$1k for boat gps when my phone and tablets hardware are just as good if not better. Boat GPS is antiquated hardware, and I'm not paying for it. I've used Navionics on my tablet to locate wrecks in palm beach, when the Contenders electronics were having a problem getting a lock. I have a ton of friends down south who dont even use their GPS anymore, they strictly use Navionics app to locate things. The times are changing folks, Navionics app is just as good imo as a stand alone unit.
