My understanding is, if you want it to stay out longer make sure it has lots of bait. If the bait runs out and the fish have nothing to eat, they will start looking for a way out, and eventually find the exit. If you go back to a trap that has no bait and no fish, don't always blame poachers, they could have just left.

I don't recall ever having a problem with bait finding its way out of the trap (at least not in numbers), but once the bait is gone, your trapped pinfish will resort to cannibalism...and you'll end up with a trap full of sickly baitfish with red nubs for tails.
