A recent video showed a new way to remove ticks without pulling. You take a qtip that you wet with water and use it to gently push the tick around in a counterclockwise motion and the tick backs itself out.

After seeing this, I have added a pack of qtips to my Boy Scout go bag.

I went through my parasitology books in between cases today. There was nothing about the way they bite in the books. I contacted a parasitologist about the matter. I was totally incorrect about the screwing in of the hypostome. He did say turning them counter clockwise will make them unattach themselves. This is what I must have misunderstood. I apologize about the mistake. But I still stand by the technique.

Last year there were numerous ticks in my yard and more than one latched on me at different times. One tick in particular was in a difficult to reach area of my body!!!! After using the tweezers method I thought there has to be a better way.....and there is! I went to the pet store and bought a tick removal tool for about $4. The tool is plastic and is shaped like a cats paw ( nail extractor) and one simply wedges the tool under the attached tick and then slowly lit and slightly twist the tick out, VOILA! Works like a charm. I found the tool at the Petco near Governors Square Mall.

Clockwise or counterclockwise? That is the question. Let's get a bag of ticks for the next NFGFC meeting and do some tests.

I use one of these and turn counter clockwise.
