Zep rust and calcium remover at Lowe's. Works great! Just make sure to wax it afterwards.

DEMON wrote:Bar Keeper's Friend is your cleaning friend around the boat. You can find it at the grocery store & is cheaper than the specialty boat stuff. Cleans your shower doors in the house with ease as well. It comes in a spray bottle or powder. It cleans with oxalic acid which is a mild acid. Just leave it on a few minutes, scrub & then wash off well with soap & water.
Just started using this and works great. Just remember, all acidic cleaners will strip off any wax you have on it.

Thanks again, I used a DE-greaser and it worked well. I also tried one of those Mr. clean magic eraser's and it actually worked the best. Wears out the eraser very quickly but worked well.
I was able to take boat out since the service this past sunday. Motor is running better than before and idle's a lot smoother. I have learned the meaning of BOAT, (Bust Out Another Thousand) as i had to have trailer bearing replaced on side of the road ten minutes after leaving house Sunday morning. Mobile Mechanic (Eddie Morris Mobile Mechanic) he jacked up, replaced bearing and wheel hub, checked other side and greased it and had me back on the road just short of an hour. He only charged me 50/hr. Highly recommend this guy if you are ever in the South Ga, North Florida (Monticello) area. but as of now, engine has had full service, GPS installed, new bearings on trailer. I hope all negatives have been corrected. Time to wet a line and throw some fresh trout on the grill.
What can anyone suggest on basic maintenance when i get out of the water? I always wash of boat and trailer to remove salt residue and i run fresh water from hose through the engine and let it run for 10-15 minutes to remove salt from it as well. Thats all i know to do? any other suggestions?

Changing the lower unit oil and spark plugs, engine filters once a season (or at the recommended maintenance periods) isn't difficult if you have the right tools and the inclination.
The fuel/water separator should be replaced every year (even if you run non-ethanol gas, which is a given).
Pull the prop a couple times a season to check for fishing line and to re-grease the splines. Periodically spray all electrical connections to protect against corrosion.
If your batteries have wing nuts, replace with lock washers and stainless steel nuts and tighten them down good. Lots of electrical fires caused by loose power cables.
Check all through-hulls and bilge pumps on a regular basis for watertight integrity and operation.
Routinely check the VHF radio for proper operation. (SeaTow has an automatic radio check service).
Inspect all required safety gear for expiration dates. Ensure the life jackets are all not torn or dry rotted.

Those Magic Erasers are very effective just remember they are actually made out of a micro-abrasive product (melamine foam)so they can do some damage if used to aggressively on certain materials. As an example they will clean a vinyl seat stain off but what is happening is the eraser is essentially micro-sanding down the vinyl surface. A little use is probably not going to do any harm but I would be careful on soft and or painted surfaces, gel coat shouldn't be a problem.
