I think that switch is unnecessary, that is just my opinion. I wouldn't worry about it Steve.

My Bay Reef has a Tilt/Trim switch on the bow, never had an issue with it but they are usually just a Contura Style waterproof switch and not terribly expensive so I'd change it out and look for any corrosion in the wiring etc. spray all the connections down and keep on trucking. I use mine all the time when I'm shallow as I keep my lower unit down for a "curb feeler" acting as a warning before I run it aground, course then I lift it a bit and try to get just a little closer and usually end up bumping the bottom so not sure I should do it that way.

My wife likes to lean against the cowling and fish sometimes and I have hit that trim switch inadvertently once or twice while fishing on the front deck, it usually gets a very fast reaction from the back of the boat :-)
