UNBELIEVABLE! How stupid I am! Up until this moment, reading this post, stupido here didn't know some of the stuff he was trying to fish with was called "jerkbait," and I have been riggin' everything soft on jigheads!! I fished a good bit on my own as a little tyke. But only in recent years have I gotten back to these roots; and catch-up is, well, what it is!

Oh, now I gots to figure out what a "hard" jerkbait is and where the name comes from too.

Aucilla, minnow type plugs such as Rapalas, Yozuri crystal minnows, Rebel, are also called hard jerk baits.

In my own defense, here's the riggin' I use: a baitrunner medium size, maybe a 4500, with 40 lb test and heavier flourocarbon leader to hang a freelined pinfish, or mayb on a CT, out there because I never caught a cobia and because I like to see what happens!

Then I keep a light spinner rigged with a jig head and use electric chicken or rootbeer or white curly tails, depending on whatever.

And I like to try,on another light spinner, the yozuri crystal minnow and I will, under a CT or freeline, fish live shrimp, pinfish or cut bait. I have caught some splendid redfish on cut mullet.

In short, I haul out a buncha stuff and I got lotsa colors and lures I can't even name or rig right!

Yup. I only have two baits, and I take both of them every time I go.

I did find this:

The terminology might be confusing to some anglers, but a "jerk bait" generally is a lure an angler must impart action to with his fishing rod. As the rod is "jerked" the lure has action, hence the name "jerk bait."

This true the way the term is used 'round here?

Don't think using a jig on a fluke aka soft jerk bait is not gonna work....My"seeker" lure is a fluke with an 1/8 oz worm weight texas rigged....I can't tell you the color, it's a secret ...basically the same as a jig head, but I use 4/0 to 5/0 hooks on soft jerk baits, too many short strikes....

I have used a large soft jerkbait (Zulu) on an in-line spinner instead of the grub it came with and had a 24 inch trout hit it not 2 feet from the boat.

I saw something following my Zulu / spinner combo and I thought it was a catfish. I stopped reeling-in the lure, and squinted at the black shape to see what a catfish was doing eyeing such a flashy / big bait.

Right about then the mouth on that trout opened, its teeth were plainly visible, its gills flaired-out, a massive bolt of adreneline started out from my chest and raced down my arms toward my fingertips. I started to reel in some slack.

The trout grabbed my bait and I set the hook forthwith. 24-inches of P.O.ed trout on about 60 inches of line.

I hoisted that sucker right into TK's boat as he told me I was gonna break my rod.

Sounds more like a heart attack to me.

I don't do alot of inshore fishing, but I took my little brother last year and he caught really nice trout on a spinner bait used for bass. It was already rigged from a lake trip, and about the fourth cast, wham! I have used them also for schoolie dolphin off Miami/WPB. Give it a try! (I hope I haven't given away anyone's double top secret! )
