Gaff and release fishing is no more acceptable than it is to kill undersize fish, oversize fish, out of season fish or dynamiting etc., etc., etc....

It just doesn't make any sense to gaff something you have no intention of keeping. I mean if they're too small you shouldn't need to gaff them anyways, If you've already got your limit you should fish barbless hooks and release them for another day. The worst part is it was on TV. Someone that just took up the sport or some young person learning might see that and think it's normal practice. Fishing shows are usually mindfull to show good conservation practices. How to hook and release a fish so that it has the greatest chance of survival, using circle hooks, etc. I mean you rarely see them keep a fish much less waste them like that.

You know that guy that blows by you when your anchored, or cuts in front of you at the ramp, or runs up and anchors within 10 feet of you after they see you catch a ladyfish.

Seems like the same kinda person just got their own fishin show.

What I mean is we've all seen people that, for some reason or another they just don't know how to act right sometimes.

Don't get me started on my brother in law in Hosford who shocks catfish on the Apalachicola River. For some reason it seems bag limits and seasons don't apply in Liberty County. I'm probably just mad cause my wife's family is from Canada and he always brings home tons of big catfish that he shocks and they're like "Oh C%$@f they are soo big". So I bring home a few trout and spanish and they say "How come you don't catch fish like C%$@f ?" And the whole time I'm thinking :smt013 "because the law applies to me for some reason, or what I mean is I follow it". It's not catching and it's not fishing it's shocking the water and scooping them up with a net, but they don't know the difference. Anyways I'll get off my soapbox just had to vent the gaffing or poor innocent amberjack reminded me of the plight of the channel cats of the Apalachicola who get shocked till their whiskers stand on end. I love the guy he's a hoot but it really irks me when he says," theres so many fish in that river you could never catch them all". So to that I say " ever heard of the North Atlantic ?"
Ok I'm done now I promise

Me too & I promise not to bait you with an AJ Nicholson DUI thread.

By the way, I have the very same shocking-catfish-on-the-Apalachicola brother in-law problem.

Litt,

thank you, I tell you what though this is nothing compared to the PS2 All Americans over at Warchant.com. They are insane over there, gives me a headache just thinking about reading their posts. I actually don't have much of an opinion. I think it's alot like 24/7 news channels that use 12 hours to give 10 min of news. I am tired of hearing the same old same old news beacause there is no new news.

hit the breaks !!!!! this thread is de-railing !!!!!

oh yea GO NOLES

Post by BANSHEE »

Since I saw this post. I was watching FSN on comcast up here in Nashville, TN. Used to live in Tallahassee, FL.. I saw what you said about gaffing the AJ's and tossing them back in. The sponsor was Tire Kingdom. Allready miss the saltwater fishing. You never know how good you got it fishing down there till you leave :smt010

I've seen other episodes of the show in question, and based on the production values I'd say that it's a few hacks producing the show, and that kind behavior doesn't surprise me. I own a production company and have worked on a number of fishing shows, and I would stop rolling tape if I ever came accross that kind of action. :smt011
This year my company was hired by another production company to work on the Professional Tarpon Tournament Series that airs on Sunshine. The tournament has been getting grief about tarpon being eaten by sharks during the course of the tournament, but I think they need to go after these guys.

Not a heck of a lot you can do about a shark "besides leave the area" he is doing what comes natural  but a gaff in a fish you aint gonna keep should be punishable by a gaff in the "well the sun don't shine there" :-D unless it's by honest mistake :smt004

I've got a "Theory" on said show, here it is. Peta, Save the Manatees and commercial fisherman have thrown together in a cynical plot to discredit Rec. anglers. They have their own film crews and hired actors acting as fishermen, doing unethical things on camera. The media, being Liberal of course, has thrown in with them and is airing this evil propaganda. 8)

Makes as much sense as Red Grouper regs. :-D
