I like to think I'm a better fisherman than most, but here's the real deal. I pay very close attention to what people say in their fishing reports. Particularly people like JumpTrout (and others). He's not going to give you all the details (no respectable fisherman would) but he is going to tell you what you need to know. Sometimes you have to read between the lines.
The other thing I think I do well is talk to everyone I meet that fishes the coast. You would be amazed at the little details you can pickup in a 3 min. "hey, how ya doin'" conversation.
Use some common sense; try to think like the fish. Think about what their needs are at the specific time you are out there.
Finally, keep moving. The GPS said I put 30 miles on the boat yesterday.

Thats what I have always said, If your not catching anything don't reach for your Tackle Box, Reach for the Key and put the motor in gear. Heck your already casting your favorite bait, how could you improve on it. A boat has a motor for the same reason a fish has a tail.

But I thought a fish has a tail to pinch...

Several years a go a guide in Suwannee told me the 1 thing you need to catch trout was a good starting battery for the outboard.
Also told me them trout had tails for a reason.

Good report and, as always, some very entertaining responses that makes me want to throw in my two cents
I got a good motor and a good battery but I'm one of them low-skill types that needs for 'em to be bitin' to catch 'em. I think weather and water conditions have a pretty big impact in this respect. But one of the reasons I joined this forum was to learn from the masters and maybe start catching them even when I ain't supposed to like you guys do.
P.S. It's just my luck that the fish would turn on about the time I get real busy at work.

Birddog is gonna think you're referring to him. His head is gonna get even bigger. We'll never hear the end of this.

If you live a breathe it then you eventually get good at it. It is a complicated place out there and that's what makes it so much fun. I tend to be skeptical about most things, and fish stories in particular. Credibility ain't easy to get but one of the criteria (for me!) looks like this:
