I am by no means an expert but I agree with this philosophy. Go refishing and throw something that at least has some plastic on it. That would be my simplified advice.BrogensDuck wrote:A friend of mine had a very simple rule about catching big trout:

Re: point me toward the big trout
What do you call a "big trout"? In other words, when can I brag on here about one?! ha ha I caught one last time out that was 3 or 4 lbs. and 22". For me that was a big trout. I've caught a couple over 5 lbs and thought they were huge!

Anything over 24 inches is a big trout
they don't merit huge till they get over 27 inches

Here are a few others I caught in the last couple of years:

Here are some caught by my friends on my boat:

The vast majority were caught on 1/8 oz jigs with shad talis or gulp shrimp.
The rest on topwaters

What was I supposed to do today?
Re: point me toward the big trout
Disregard everything I've ever said about big trout. Given my lack of performance in actually being able to catch such a trout when I want one not only do I obviously have no idea, my advice is worth

Re: point me toward the big trout
Some say the big ones are out deep, some say they are in shallow water. From my experience, the biggest ones are caught in extremely shallow (1-2 feet) around creek and river mouths. But I agree, if you catch a monster, you need to move on. The big guys don't normally hang out together (unless it's low-tide and you've got a bunch of em trapped in a hole somewhere).
And while I do agree that big baits catch bigger fish, big fish will usually eat anything you throw at em. I prefer to finess it.
