I dont and wont ask anybody to give me gas money on a fishing trip, I will however take a greasy cheese burger/fries and a few cold beers when we get back in. Only if offered of course :lick:
Ive never asked for it either , and most of the time turn it down when offered. The sad part of it is, we are pretty selfish in our bitchin and complaining about gas money for fishin when there are people who cant afford the gas to go to work. To say come on 5.00/gallon is kinda shioty, even in jest. When this country is sold to the Chinese and your forced to worship Buddha, remember come on 5.00/gallon. Just my .02 and then some.

Oh and by the way, I knda like a greasy cheeseburger ,too. :-D

:o I didn't know I was going to get crucified for asking the question. :o But some of us won't be able to go at all without dividing costs. I would rather divide cost and get to go more often. I suppose the guys that don't offer or feel the need to, also don't help clean the boat or respect it when they are on it. :smt012 I am sure that all of you have had someone on your boat that you would never invite back.

Understand HNM, these guys are for the most part full of shiot. Gas gets to 5.00 /gallon and Chalk tight self would be shioting on himself. He and a few others are proud owners of small , very shallow, very efficient, extremely nice boats. The gas prices do not effect them as much as it does others of us with bigger boats. Chalk lives close to his job and the boat ramp so it doesnt effect him as much. Hes just stirring the pot as I like to do ,often. :-D Dont take it personal. Choose your fishing partners carefully for their angling ability and comoradarie and if they fit the bill they will probably offer to help on the gas and wash the boat or clean the fish. If they dont, unless theyre your brother in law, dont invite them back. Just my .02 and then some. :-D

Here goes with the gas price talk again  Have we really come to a point where people really consider not fishing due to gas that is $1.50 per gallon more than it was a few years ago??? Truth is, too many people these days just dont want to live below their means. Bottom line. Got to have 3-4 credit cards, new vehicles every few years & new boats (financed of course), houses they can't afford because they want it right now (with interest only or 30-40 year ARM's) and iPods & cell phones for their teens. Then when gas prices soar because we are using so freakin much of the stuff, regardless of the price, people start to fuss. The more it costs, it seems the more we use  I would like to hear where people have cut back in other areas instead of just wanting the things they want to stay cheap to remain that way. In this country, we have the choice to buy what we want and how much of it we want. We dont even have to have the money for it when we want it. It's called the joys of CAPITALISM. I dont care if an oil executive gets $400 million to retire or as a bonus or if the company has had record profits....good for them. I hope my customers keep making tons of money and calling me for work. God bless 'em. It keeps me going to the coast for work and fishing  If oil and gas was our business, we would want the same profits I'm sure if our business was doing that well. Like the saying goes "You're worth what you can get." Just ask a pro athlete. Heck, why does it cost $30 plus to even go to an FSU game. Because people will pay it. The day may come where I have to go back to fishing in my granddads old fiberglass boat with a '62 Johnson 10 hp. I'm fine with that.....he did it for years and caught more trout than I may ever catch. Oh well, I better shut up before I upset more people than Chalk :o Gonna go put some of that $100 grouper on the grill from yesterday :lick:

I wasn't trying to crucify you HNM just stating how I viewed the situation. You asked the question and got several peoples opinions on the subject. I won't and don't ask for gas money because I was going anyway and appreciated the company or I wouldn't have invited them. They folks I invite are expecting a good time as best as I can provide, no more no less. If they want to chip in that is their choice but I'm not looking for that.
I wash my boat because I'm ticky about how it gets done and it in itself lets me relax a little and a cold makes it even better.
I hope you don't take my comments the wrong way.

First, my take on gas prices is a little different than most. I have looked at oil companies profits, and PERCENTAGE wise, they are not out of line. The talking heads on TV always use things like "Billions in profit" when talking about it. However, it is a matter of scale.

Now to explain, lets compare the oil companies to a candy bar maker. Ok, the candy bar costs the company 8 cents to make, but they charge the wholesaler 22 cents for it. The oil company has to pay 2.50 a gallon (after refining costs) and charges the wholsaler 3.10 a gallon for it. Do the math and see who is gouging.

The thing that makes it look like they are making so much in gas is a pure matter of scale. We citizens buy HUGE dollar amounts of gas.

Now on the flip side, I do find it unamerican for an oil exec to make 400 million a year when his fellow citizens are struggling to pay for gas. But the plain fact is that even if he did not accept but 100,000 a year of it. it would not make a pennies difference to the pump price.

We need to start blaming who is really at fault. Look around at us all. We drive Big SUV's and Z71 4 wheel drives, use everything plastic (yep, plastic takes oil) and then point fingers at big oil.

I see gas going to 10 bucks a gallon plus when China's economy booms with all of our money we are sending over there thru Wal-Mart. (I do not even want to get started on that one). Inflation will be making up a good sized chunk of that 10 bux in my opinion.

Meanwhile, our politicians are taking our tax money and handing it out like bubble gum.

We have become a wasteful, spoiled society, and are fiddling while Rome is burning.

Solution: Don't worry, the problem will take care of itself, but I see some very hard times ahead.

:-D Folks like me live a long way from the coast. And I have never been one to fish by myself. It's not really safe and not that much fun. Who want's to catch a fish of a lifetime with nobody arround to see it or celibrate with? I simply a cannot afford to go by myself. So I would not be going anyway. Besides most of the time friends (That dont have boats) call me and say "when are we going fishing". I live out in the country and my wife and I are about to carpool because of gas prices. :smt009

You couldnt pay me $30 to go to an FSU game :smt009 . Ya'll split the gas and thats cool. I think that was the method of fishing HNM was refering too. Would you have been as happy had you of had to pay the entire $100.00? Alot of what you said is true. But the major problem is no solution fits all. You can get by with smaller vehicles. I can not. You choose to drive cars with a little more experience, I have to have something with less miles because of service issues, OSHA, and reliability. Believe me , if it was cheaper in the long run to pay for one and run it til the wheels fell off I would be doing it. I have never financed a boat , dont have a home that I cant pay for or with an ARM. I do have an IPOD and a cell phone or three that I enjoy. All of this being said, I still really dont like paying over $4.00 for diesel fuel. I agree we dont like to live below our means, who the helk does?
Yes the USA thrives on Capitalism. But lets put it like this. What if I was the only retailer in the US you could buy a refrigerator from. A refrigerator basically costs the consumer around 400 bucks anyday of the week. Well, for no reason whatsoever and in a very short amount of time, I decide to jack up the price of that basic refigerator 400%. Would you go to using an ice chest? I dont need a refrigerator to run my business. I have to have diesel fuel. Therefore, you will pay more at my store and every other retailer for the BASIC things you and every other human must have. The fuel prices the American consumer has allowed itself to pay is a shame. Youre 100% right that if we didnt buy so much of the stuff, we wouldnt pay as much. Unfortunately , we've allowed this to happen as this is the only type of fuel source we have readily available. You think fuel is high now? wait til 2015 and the time when all vehicles must have at least a 31MPG rating and 35MPG by 2025. The manufacturers are upset about it. Imagine if the manufacturers actually had the insight to build a pick up with enough HP to pull a decent size load and it could get 35 MPG. Now youre talking about captialism. Think how many of the same trucks there would be on the road! Its not the fuel companies' fault that we've allowed them to become the wolves and us the lambs. Call me spoiled , whatever. Ive worked hard to be able to do the things I like to do and theres no apologies offered. I wish true Capitalism and ingenuity would take back over and solve this fuel cost crisis. Thats the only true solution for all. Build more efficient vehicles and loose our dependency on petroleum products. Just my .02 and then some. Oh and DT, " Nail on the Head"

The market bubble will burst and we will see prices fall 60-80 cents a gallon. It is just a matter of time...

At Shell Island Fish Camp there is a whole group of us that have our own boats and fish for grouper in the same areas. It is really kind of funny. Everyone wants to go in their boat so we will have 3 or four boats with one or two people in them fishing the same areas twenty or thirty miles offshore. Lately there has been a lot more talk about carpooling. Split 40 or 50 gallons of gas 4 ways instead of paying all of it and it really is no more painful than filling up the inshore boat. Bet when the time comes everyone still goes in their own boats.

We will see.
