Hi folks! I have been fishing Keaton for a while and always bring my 8wt. along for the boat ride but I never seem to get anything to hook up and go right back to the spinning outfit. Most guys I know don't fly fish, so we're always runnin around chasin trout. I would love to try and catch some of those reds up in the shallows. What flies work best for em? I bought a "Redfish Assortment" from BP last year but have yet to get any of 'em wet. Also, I would like to try and learn some tying, any suggestions on a "starter kit" . I have seen a few that are reasonably priced on BP, Cabelas and even Orvis.

I personally wouldn't buy a "starter"kit. You can start with an inexpensive vice from any number of places. Then I'd go to through some of the previous posts under fly tying and see what materials and procedures are used to create any number of good flys.
Also there are any number of good sites you can learn from by doing a web search under "fly tying". You'll also need a good bobbin to hold your thread, good scissors and probably a whip finisher.. I'd buy my material for specific flys I wanted to tie instead of a generic kit of tying material.. Also, do as I have and ask questions on this forum. Lots of good information members are glad to share.

skiffjockey - I started my fly tying out with a chartreuse and white clouser (and probably should have ended with a clouser - would have saved lots of money). Its a great fly, easy to tie and fairly easy to cast as long as you keep the eyes small. It also catches fish. You would need:

1 white bucktail
1 chartreuse bucktail
chartreuse or silver or pearl krystal flash (or flashabou)
#2 - #4 saltwater hooks (mustad 34007 or gamaktasu equivalent)
5/32 or 3/16 dumb bell eyes (lead or brass)
chartreuse or white or red thread (Danville flymaster +)
Sally Hansen Hard as Nails nail polish (for head cement)

Probably be about $25.00 - $30.00 all told. There are lots of tutorials on the web. Bob Clouser (the inventor of the fly) has a youtube tutorial.

Thanks Terrier, I have quite a few Clousers I have bought and the do look like an easier task than some of the stuff I see you guys posting! I'll take all the help you guys can give me!

prolly not a fly swap but a get together of sorts. the plan is to get together from time to time down at Beacon Hill and tie some flys and drink a few beersand/or Chalks whiskey, throw some burgers on the grill and maybe smoke a few cigars. Would be a good time to learn some new patterns.
