Looks like that Small Craft was issued thru Saturday Morning.I would to see a Redfish clinic from you but can you catch a trout along with them Reds?

Warrior wrote:Keyser you know as well as anyone that with 15-20knot wind there will be a smal craft issued for Sat. we were tring to make a decision so everyone could make different plans in advance.Sure sorry you would rather eat Chili than come fish a Trout tourney I bet if it was Redfish you would fish instead. The club tournaments have always been the 1st Sat. of each month maybe they should move the Chili cookoff to another weekend.
captkeyser wrote:I commend you for looking out for everybodies saftey and understand that I have no say in the matter as I am not on the commitee. Everything you mentioned about tides and winds and build up is somewhat true, but not for the conditions that are currently being predicted. If you are going to cancel for moderate conditions like these then what kind of precident is that setting. How can we feel confident to plan days off in advance for future tournaments if there is no set protocol for canceling (Lightning, Small Craft Advisory). Sure these are the most fun conditions to fish, but that is part of the fun.

I hope the conditions are more favorable for the March tournament but I will not be attending.
As for the weather, we'll will just have to see if a small craft is issued..... but as of now it hasn't been and with the winds subsiding it probably won't be. At this point I am beating a dead horse. :smt009 I booked a beach house months ago for the cook off so that is out of my hands and has nothing to do with Trout fishing, if you would like a lesson or two on Redfishing in moderate conditions then I would be more than happy to put on a clinic for you especially Warrior.

JT Chili is a must at the weighin, even if I won't be there. :lick:

captkeyser wrote:Really? There isn't even a small craft advisory and still canceling. :smt011 You do know that March 6th is the Chilli Cook Off on St. George. Maybe it's just me, but part of the fun in fishing tournaments is to see how you do with the conditions that you are dealt.......that's how you get better! I was really looking forward to fishing all of these tournaments this year. Very disappointed. :smt011

Saturday...North wind 15 to 20 knots...decreasing to 10 to 15 knots late in the afternoon. Seas 2 to 4 feet nearshore and 4 to 6 feet offshore...subsiding to 2 to 3 feet nearshore and 3 to 5 feet offshore. Protected waters a moderate chop.
The fact of the matter is that it’s February and we have to look at a number of other things besides wind. A small craft advisory in July is different than one in February (or even 10-15 knot winds) in my, and in most of the tournament committee’s opinion.

Saturday the water temperature will be in the 40’s. There’s also a big tide swing that day with high tide coming around 2:15. You’ll have a whole bunch of water trying to push into the St. Marks River, while the wind is doing its best to hold it all out. At the same time people will be heading back to the ramp. You and I both know that under those conditions waves stack up in the St. Marks channel. Big waves and small boats usually mean that someone’s going to get wet. Getting wet in 30 degree temperatures is dangerous. Not to mention, not all of our members have the boating experience that you do. Some might not have ever handled a boat in those conditions.

It’s been argued that they COULD stay in the river, but do some of them have the experience to know better than to venture out onto the flats in those conditions? I think the answer is NO. Would everyone be dressed appropriately or have spare clothes in case they get wet? Again, probably not.
At the end of the day, the committee has to make a decision for all of the participants. Some are more experienced than others for sure, but we have to look out for EVERYONE and we also have to look out for the best interests of the club.

Again, nothing is stopping you from fishing on Saturday. Pretend that it’s tournament day or better yet, host your own tournament for those who want to fish. Make an announcement on BBF. You can borrow the club scales. That way you can get the tournament experience out of fishing on Saturday.

Casey I was also very disappointed that the tournament was canceled. I however agree that it was the right decision for all of the reasons you mentioned about. If there are those who wish to fish, have at it and make your own tournament. It is very difficult to make a decision that all would be happy with under these conditions and I applaud you and the committee for having the guts to make what you feel is the best interest for all involved. See you in March.

So I was wrong, what!? :-D I know that I touched a nerve (not like that JT) with some folks on here and I just want to say that was not my intention. I was just very frustrated with the decision as I personally believe that saftey would not be jeopardized any more tomorrow than it would any other day. If you feel unsafe then by all means don't fish, but I just feel that the option to fish should have been there for those that wanted to. I realize now that this organization is based more around camaraderie and just plan fun more so than die hard competition. So I apologize if I have offended anyone.

For those of you, ahem, that were concerned with not being able to catch a redfish, ahem ahem (Warrior and Casey) :-D looks like you slid by this time. There will be plenty of other chances to go toe to toe.

Warrior all I gotta say is this, remember when we fished that tournement on your boat in waters that neither of us knew. Fish were caught, remember? I'll leave it at that. :-D

No bad blood here. Anyone wanna go fishing tomorrow????

Ain't scurred, EK! How bout this...You and I can put together a 3 tournament series for June, July and August (not associated with NFGFC). We'll fish for redfish (2 man teams, 2 fish 18-27" weighed). It'll be open to anyone and we'll keep track of the weights for the 3 month series. It'll be pretty informal, low entry fees ($25 bucks a team, $5 per person for a big fish pot) and at the end someone will have bragging rights! We'll talk more about it as the time draws closer. Team Hog is in. Bring the noise Back Country and No Fluke!

Session has me out of commission for Feb, March, April, and potentially some of May. Fishing / handling the NFGFC tourneys will be about all I can handle. We might be able to start it in May. I'm flexible...maybe the 2 reds, 2 trout deal.

Can ya'll believe all the rukus that a cold windy day with extremely low water causes. :smt005 I just wish Trout season would hurry up and open. I really don't get all that excited over a Redfish. :-?

I'll be here all night, pay at the door. :smt006

Negative tides are desired when fishing for reds. The lower the water the better, you can see tails better that way  ...... even in windy conditions. :-D

That is good with me Casey. I know you've got your hands full. In the meantime I'll be pre-fishing. :smt005
