I'll second that, great read Casey. My partner Bryce Hill and I have fished Team Seatrout the passed two years, and your right the competition is incredible. We placed 8th overall the first year and 3rd overall this passed year. We one the ABC (Associated Builders and Contracters) tournament last year with 3 fish over 25" the big one was just under 6lbs. We also placed fourth in trout during the Big Bend Saltwater classic and took 2nd overall in the Team Event. By no means do I mean to brag or come across arrogant, I just think that it is interesting how different strategies and lures work for different people. We do not use gulps, never have. This is mostly due to the cost. They have obviously worked for you, why change?

I fish 3 lures. I have tried everything that I could find but these three I have the most confidense in. (Super Spook, Bomber, 7" Bass Assasin)

In my opinion confidense is the key, and I think that most would agree. Go with what you have found works.

and I look forward to learning a lot from the anglers that fish these tournaments. It is easy to fish the same area, but having to bounce around makes things much more challenging. I look forward to an exciting year. See you tonight.

haha - thanks for letting that slide...by calling it out even though that ain't really what I meant at all  - just stirrin up the pot anyhow - you obviously do very well with them, and a heckuva lot better than me lately - I done seen some of them reports. My point was same as yours - just my experience with them, which has been quite the opposite of yours. It may be that the correct way to work them is from a kayak and or wearing a canadian tuxedo and I was actually right that I just have no idea how to use them...I ain't tryin to imply they scare the fish away or nuthin, just that they don't live up to the hype.

Oh but I forgot to mention...always keep some on the boat...when they get all dry and shrinky-dink they can be really useful. Out in Mojo's boat one day his flushin hose burst off his yammy-ha. We anchored up for a few, I whittled the tail fin off a dried out 4" shrimp and jammed it up the hose. We sat on that spot fishin for about 30 minutes while it soaked up water and expanded inside the remainign part of the hose. Kept the hose plugged and sealed at WOT for the rest of the day.

I became a convert to Gulp baits last year. I still use DOA's and other plastics,(Nortons), but have included Gulps in my line-up now with no apologies. I held off for awhile but saw friends fishing with me doing quite well on them so decided to stop being hard headed and joined the crowd.

I used to not use baits like Gulp, because the purist part of me insisted on catching fish, as Tred Barta would say, "the hard way". I wouldn't use anything with any sort of attractant on it. Then my purist side found fly fishing, so now, when I do pick up the spinning rod anything goes - whatever catches the most fish. Although, I still don't use live bait, just for the maintenance factor. This is somewhat embarassing, but one time I was anchored up by a tower in SJB, and there were tons of trigger fish swimming around it, about 15 ft or so down. I started throwing a fly at them, and they behaved a lot like a sheepshead - follow, nibble, but no take. I happened to have a bag of Gulp sandfleas in the boat. I stuck one on the hook of my fly, and it was game on. Started catching one after the next. I won't say that I legitimately caught a triggerfish on the fly, but I will say that Gulp really do work when other things won't.

A few years ago, the SWA became really popular and I went through many a bag and caught lots of fish with them....everything from trout to cobia. In the past 2 years, I ain't caught #@% with them. I'm always willing to try something new.....like the saying goes "It's only freaky the first time you try it."  So, I bought into the Gulp craze. I mean they have to be good if Kevin's sells them right????
I don't get to fish much with my dad and boys together these days, so when we go, I like to make the trip nice. A few months ago we went out St. Marks and nothing was biting. I remembered that I had a few of the molting Gulps in the bottom of my box, so I broke 'em out. We proceeded to wear the trout out over the next 1 1/2 hours. So, I agree that you need to use what works for you and what catches you fish and not worry about other people's opinions. If I had to resort to whitebread and a bream hook, I would do it
