Live Oak Island 6/8

Went down to Live Oak Island to wade fish the later part of the falling tide. Took a canoe just to tow to carry my stuff in. I have found that when the flats get exposed, dragging the canoe is much easier than dragging the redfishing machine.

Got out to where I wanted to fish by 4:30 and started catching ladyfish and a few small trout right off using a Yo-Zuri Mag Darter knock-off and a Catch 2000. Wound it up about seven with five keepers in the cooler and a bunch of shorts released. Some so small they wouldn't have made the cut even back when the size limit was 12". Didn't catch any over 20", but didn't really expect to for where I was and what I was doing. The two biggest were 18". The trout seemed to be tightly schooled, I was either on them (fish on every cast), or I wasn't. I caught most of the fish after the tide fell out enough that a Catch 2000 was running too deep and getting in the grass and I switched to a 7M. :D

There were a few Spanish around, but I didn't hook up with any.

Standing out there almost waist deep, I got blind-sided by something in the back of my legs. :o Never did see what it was, but it's body felt about the size of a big, keeper red. I figure it was something feeding on the bait up in the shallow grass when a 14 1/2' shadow (my canoe) drifted over it. :o <GIANT OSPREY, RUNFORYOURLIFE>

  Good report, Charles. We fished today until about 2;30 PM and 3 of us only got 4 keepers. It was slow, sounds like the bite started after we packed it in. I bet you wern't as hot as we were, either.
