outboard help for tomorrow morning: Please help

My last trip the pull-cord on my outboard broke. Today I bought a new pull-cord, but I don't know how to attach it to the fly wheel. Do I tie three knots (one for each notch in the wheel)? I think that would allow the last knot to hit the casing before the first the first knot becomes unwrapped (which would result in no recoil). Does the fly wheel need to turn the entire time the motor is running? Please help.
Thanks in advance

If this is a pull start motor, the recoil has to be taken apart. The piece of the old rope that is still in the recoil has to be removed. The new rope has to be installed in the recoil. And, the recoil spring has to be retensioned.

TC-thanks for the info on such short notice. Unfortunately, this sounds like slightly more of a process than I had anticipated. Looks like I may be relying pulling a rope by hand today and then looking into installing the new pullcord properly later.
Thanks again

If you rely on putting the rope around the flywheel, it only uses one knot and one knotch. And yes, be very careful, the flywheel moves very fast the entire time the motor is running.
