ALARM!

Well we took the Ugly Duckling out this morning from the Fort. Started fine, ran fine, full power, peed real good - all OK.

Made it South of the junction about 300 yards and the alarm went off - what's with that!?

The motor is a '96 Merc 175, not oil injected. Looked as though she was OK after I left her cool off a little bit then we'ld start again. One time we would go 90 seconds, the next time 45 before the alarm would sound.

One time it would look like more steam than water coming from the pee hole, then it would start peeing good again. This is only the 3rd trip out in this 25' mammoth so I don't know too much background on the motor.

Never made it as far as the LH. When I finally called the trip and limped back to the fort, the pee was steady and strong. Almost turned back South, but chose to have fun later than be sorry for it today!

I read back (http://www.bigbendfishing.net/phpbb/vie ... m&&start=0) on "alarm" but BIG's problem sounds a little different than mine.

Any suggestions on a path of action? Thanks.

Sounds like a stuck thermostat.

Or a bad water pump impeller.

Since the bottom will be off anyway I'd change both just so be sure.I have been changing my impeller, thermostats and head gaskets as part of a bi-annual type maintenance since I started running saltwater(cheap insurance) as compared to Sea-Tow.I normally run V-4 OMC motors. :hammer:

THE BIGGEST PROBLEM YOU HAVE WITH THAT ENGINE IS THAT IT IS A BLACK ANCHOR, GET YOURSELF A ENGINE YOU CAN DEPEND ON, OMC, EVINRUDE, JOHNSON, YAMMIE, OR SUSUKI. MY .02.

A friends merc had a similar problem, two paddles on the water pump impeller where broken off and it still peed good but would run hot under way. Good luck.

BTW that 15 Johnson is still running like a champ.

OK, since you have an overheat alarm and a good stream, I had the same, mine was the thermostat.

Have the same problem. Have a merc 150 saltwater(carbs) a little over a year old. Have has it to three shops. Did it again this weekend. Done it since day one. Everyone says, "seems alright when we run it at the shop". Will try Pete at Sunshine, then to Mercury I will go screaming. It overheats when running about 2k at slow speeds. Happened this week going out Destin in seas to rough to plane on. Not a good feeling when you have to shut down going thru the inlet. The alarm went off, scared the hell out of me. p.s. Motor pee's good. All signs as far as water flow out of the engine look normal, even when it's starting to overheat.
