My son in law does a LOT of bass fishing…All he uses for reels are Shimano Chronarchs…He asked me how I thought they would hold up for flats fishing and the salt water..I’d never used anything much in bait casters except 5500’on the flats so I didn’t know. ..
This week he brought me two Chronarch 100’s he’d had serviced. Nice present ! I put em on 7’ Falcon rods ….Unreal how smooth they are ! I loaded em with 14 lb test..
Figure in next week or so I’ll try to get back down to St Marks and give them a workout….
Is there any special attention you need to give them ? I can’t see me disassembling these like I do a 5500…Can you just wash them out with a hose and oil them ?

Yep, just wash'em down like you would any reel, fresh water and maybe a little soap. Every now and then you are going to want to break them apart and rinse them well. Let them dry completely for a few days and reapply some oil. The lighter the oil the better. I've been using curados in saltwater for about 3-4 years with no problems.

You might want to drop down to 10 or 12 lb. test line. They seem to cast a little better with lighter line. I always recommend using a 20 lb. Floro leader.

They will work fine in Saltwater with just a freshwater rinse after each trip and a yearly cleaning. I agree to drop down to 10-12# test, especially for the 100 size reel.

They should work fine as long as they are not the magnesium version, which are highly corrosive in saltwater. If they are the standard version then all should be good. One thing I do with reels that have wiffle spools (ones with the holes in the spool) is to wrap teflon tape (plumbers tape) around the spool before I put any line on the spool, that way saltwater will not seep through the line and into the reel through the holes in the spool.

Oh I forgot the newest version of the Chronarch Mg is saltwater safe, the older version are not, they now coat the Mg with a clear coat to seal it from saltwater.

dang boys, I must not be doing father's day right or something. I looked up the chronarch on line and they are only the midrange baitcaster.. why bother?

Price: Finally the issue of price. At 249.99 this reel is in the mid range of baitcasters and affordable to most anglers. When you consider the features, magnesium body, and incredible low weight, the price doesn't seem prohibitive at all. Quite the opposite in fact. There are few reels that can match Shimano's new lightweight performer when it comes to true magnesium construction and refinement.

As said as long as they are not the magnesium version you should be fine...It has about the same number of parts as the 5500's....I took mine apart 5 times one day

Do you have the 100BSV which is the Saltwater Version? You can tell by whether it has holes in the spool. No holes means it a saltwater version. I got two myself, and its going to be hard to find anything smoother or better. Your a very lucky man, I had to buy miine. Cha Ching!

I have the 100BSV....Would rather have the Curado 100 though over the Chronarch

Dang, that's more for one reel than I have invested in all five of my rigs combined but, it's y'alls money

It is retribution for all makeup, high heels, spa visits and all that other non fishing related stuff we buy for our better half

Expensive, I cut back on drinking, and I don't buy gas for my Kayak. Chalk, those Chronarchs are a better investment the the new Curado. If you had the Curado, you would want the Chronarch. I was talking with a guy who fishes for Shimano about that last night. He's thinking of gettings some Curado' as backups but went with the Chronarchs.

I have both a new Curado and a new Chronarch...I also have a new Citica...Hell, a few more reels and I will have the entire 2006 Shimano baitcaster line

I prefer the Curados, they are lighter and they fit my hand better...If you compare the part schematics to one another there are only a few pieces that are different...The Chronarch is nice, I just like the Curado's better for the weight and the money
