Bwahahahaha! Steve (abcarias) and I hit Alligator Harbor at sunup. Man was it a beautiful morning. The bugs didn't eat us up too bad and we got the boats in the water just before that big orange heat tab broke over the horizon. The water was gorgeous all day. The heat did get a little atrocious by midday, but we really hadn't planned to be out that long.
Our goal was to target Tarpon and Sharks. It was my first trip, in the Hobie Outback, into the salt, so I figured I wanted to break it in right... ...on something BIG!
Before going any further, I'll just let you know up front that we saw ONE tarpon and that was at a pretty good distance. He was HUGE, but we couldn't get to him in a timely manner and he didn't come up again that we saw.
The goal was then to get me on a shark. First order of business, catch some mongrel fish that can be sacrificed... Very soon after launching, Steve hooked on to something that was seeming to give his rod a bit more of a workout than your average catfish or trout. At first I was thinking that he'd grabbed the wrong rod and had some overly light gear onhand. Nope, he had a 5lb+ catfish.

We finally got some bait and after catching the first shark of the day, Steve anchored up, got me anchored up, and we proceeded to wait for me to get my shark. In the meantime, BOTH of Steve's rods are bent and line's screaming.

Yup, two more sharks for Steve.

For those of you keeping score at home... it's Steve = 3... ...Ron = 0. It was at this point he began saying things like, "Hey Ron, does your husband fish?" and the like. LOL!
I'm just kidding. Steve was a great guide and did everything he good to put me on a shark. It just wasn't my day to catch one. I did catch a ton of catfish. The weirdest thing... ...not a singly trout was had by either of us. Hmmm. Where have they gone?
It was a gorgeous day on the water and spent with a great friend. Many thanks to Steve for taking me out for the Hobie's maiden salt voyage and to try and get me hooked up. Even with a big goose egg for sharks, I STILL had a marvelous time!!!
Can't wait for the next excursion!
