LEAF SPRING

THAT IS NO BIG DEAL IF THE SPRING HANGER IS ANY GOOD. JUST JACK THE FRAME UP, TAKE A TORCH AND CUT OFF THE OLD BOLTS ON THE SPRING, KNOCK IT OUT AND PUT A NEW COMPLETE SPRING IN AND BOLT THROUGH THE SPRING, COVER THE ENTIRE SPRING WITH GREASE AND AWAY YA GO. WHEN YA COME OUT OF SALT WATER BACK THE TRAILER IN A FRESH WATER POND, RIVER OR LAKE LET IT SET ABOUT 5 MINUTES, THEN PULL OUT . WHEN YA GET HOME SPRAY THE ENTIRE SPRING WITH W.-D- 40. I HAVE A TRAILER HERE THAT I HAVE HAD SINCE 1972, IT IS PAINTED STEEL CHANNEL FRAME. STILL IN GOOD SHAPE, IT GETS DUMPED IN FRESH WATER AFTER EVERY SALTWATER USAGE, THEN SPRAY THE SPRINGS WITH W-D 40 WHEN YA GET HOME AND GIVE THE BEARINGS A SHOT OF GREASE.

"Fresh-er" water in the river vs the saltwater at Lighthouse. Trailor doesn't get submerged in the salt. Thats my reasoning. Thats influences where I fish from. Washing it down afterwards is good,but if it don't get "as much" exposure to salt it will last longer. IMHO.

Well since exposure to salt is not my current problem and the broken spring can be attributed to someone running off the side of the LH ramp, I think that's where I'll take it back to for it to finally die - (Saturday at 0600 would be prime to get in the slot).

RMS says they still have "a good selection" of parts.

MudDucker, if you can stretch that Valdosta roller another foot or two - I'll come look at it!

You can fish Saturday. Just leave early and drive slowly.

Well it took a while, loads of sweat and $101 to replace both leaf springs and the 6 bolts, 4 U-bolts, plates some extra U bolts, etc. today.

I had to only Sawzall 2 of the old U bolts off - everything else unbolted fairly easily. Got one (hummm hummm) with my trailer today.

Things learned -
If able, leave the boat somewhere instead of on the trailer;
Find which somebody borrowed your jackstands before you get into the job;
Have more than one floor jack;
Get started before 11:00 (in the summer) or plan to do the job in the winter months.

Time to rock and roll!
