Looking for a high-quality headlamp. Need one for night fishing, camping, etc. that puts out decent light but not too heavy. What do you use? Where purchased?

any of the models made by Petzel will serve your purpose well. The best place I have found to buy them is Sierra Trading Post. Search online and you'll typically be able to find a couple models for a significant discount. You can everything from a light that runs on a couple AAs to larger lights with recharable batteries. From about $25-150. I'm guessing Sports Authority and some other local retailers sell them as well, but probably not as cheap.

Tom, a good friend & hunting/fishing partner bought me this one for my birthday 2 years ago now and It's still running on the original battery. I use this light everywhere. I really like it because I can wear it with or without a hat and not get a headach from it. Some of the headlamps are heavy and tend to make my head hurt with prolonged wear.

fish on!!,

I'm having a hard time wrapping enough duct tape 'round my noggin to make the mag light steady. How 'bout you post a photo of you wearin' this set up so we can see just how it's done. Make sure you include a shot of you taking off that duct tape!

Tom, tried but the pics didnt turn out. I'm not gonna have to shave for a while.

I've got an LED head light from walmart that works pretty good. About 15-20 bucks. It also has a red LED on it but I'm not totally sure what the purpose is.

The red light is for night use. Red light supposedly does not impair your night vision.

This is the one I have that I Really like.

I also have a couple of Optronics Nightblaster HL-6000 that a I really don't like. Brighter than I need and the run time on 4 AAs is only about 30 minutes. Also there's no strap over the head, so the thing keeps riding down with the weight of the batteries.

Hey Tom,
The light Creech posted a link for is by far the best all time light available and is supported by Backpacker magazine and myself. I'm an avid hiker and have hiked a great deal around the country and I have about 4 different headlamps and each one serves it's own purpose.
It really depends on what you plan to do with this light and what conditions you plan on this working flawlessly. If you will be using it during extremely cold temps than you will want a light with a battery pack that rests on the back of your head like a BlackDiamond moonlight or something along those lines and they take AA's or AAA's depending on the model and they usually have 4 to 5 led's with various light settings. If it is regular conditions then Petzl's are a very great all around light and dependable. They last forever! Just pay attention on what batteries they take and "IF" you can replace the battery before throwing them away.

http://www.campmor.com is an excellent site to pick any of these items and they are usually the cheapest on most any gear.

So many toys and just enough money to buy them all!!
Good luck!

I use this little enigizer headlamp from Walmart about $12
Image

The Energizer LED Headlamp has 1 Red LED for better night\ vision and 2 white LED's for color clarity and brightness. Runs 8 times longer than Eveready Krypton Headlights for 50 hours of burn time! This Energizer Headlamp even comes with batteries. Sometimes I forget I am wearing it. Puts out a surprising abount of light.

I got a little penlight that holds two AA batteries. It's small enough
I hold it between my teeth. It's the only light I use to traverse the
Anky at night. Always keep in mind that light can really blind your
vision at night.
