I just had a question from a coworker about how to store 4 sit on top Kayaks. From what he tells me they'r 9 footers.

Since he doesn't have enough room inside the garage, my suggestion was to build a couple of T's (similar to a closeline pole) with a second cross bar below the top T out of pressure treated materials.

Place them aprox 5 ft apart leaving 2' of yak hanging over each end. Put an eye bolt in the post above each yak and another one in the end of each cross bar for a bungee strap to tie down the hull. 4x4 post and 2x4 or 2x6 cross members. Possibly run a ridge pole across the top and cover the whole thing with a tarp if he wanted to. Since I've never set foot (or anything else) in one of these contraptions, I'd be interested in hearing any suggestions or having any concerns pointed out with respect to my suggested method. I have a similar rack to what you described on the outside of my garage. Mine is four posts with cross bars for the canoe and kayak, made out of landscape timbers.
I store the boats upside down and don't worry about covering them. My paddles and stepladders are stored on the same rack.

Well, one thing is for sure, don't sit it on the ground and hope that it will hold its shape because it will not unless you lay it on its top. The best thing I can think of in a limitied space situation is to hang them from the wall, one above the other. You can get those ratching rope type (Not belt)tie downs with the hooks on them and wench it into position after you secure the other end to a ceiling near the wall, that way you store it on its side and flat to the wall. It gives you more space too.

Thanks jsuber. I saw those as well. The problem for my coworker is his garage won't handle 4 yaks and he needs to go outside with them. That's not to say you couldn't use a couple of posts to attach the hangers to.
