Where do the pinfish go?

I went out Friday with intentions of a little groupering but gave up way early because I couldn't catch any bait. I've never seen it when I couldn't even catch pinfish (although I usually have stopped fishing and started hunting by this time of the year). Caught more than I needed in 20 minutes last time out (2 weeks ago). Do they leave and go somewhere after it turns colder or is there something really simple that I don't know?

I know that some go offshore to deeper water. I have caught them while fishing for rockbass in the winter.
