Left the dock on Sunday with 4 great guys and ice on my truck. Very low tide! Simple report.....Ended up with 20 gags to 15 lbs with about 6 over 12, 2 big Aj's, plus caught a 15lb red snapper, 23lb redfish and threw back keeper grouper. Caught most all fish on dead bait. Couldnt ask for a better day and the weather was nice and winds light. Casualties....one broken Star Rod. This makes 4 of them that have broke and only one was a high sticking problem. Don't know why they are not so great any more.

Great report Capt. Tom. Come on Dec. 23rd. Pray for slight winds and hungry fish.

Cran-

Not sure what the star rod was made of (glass/graphite composite) I think. Here's a pic of the brute that caused the damage. He's wearing the overalls :-?

That is a healthy looking grouper. :D

I was interested, because most of the "grouper rods" I have seen in the shops there, appeared to be made of solid glass.
Quite rigid rods, with just a very little top section action.
I would imagine they are very hard to break.

Looks like laminated carbon fiber to me.
also called graphite composite

Don't know if I was guilty of 'high sticking' (heck, I never even played hockey before) However, I offered to pay Captain Tom for the rod and he graciously turned it down, that's the kind of standup guy he is. Seems I remember reading a thread awhile back on the FS board that Star had changed blanks on their rods and they were not of the same quality as the older Star rods. Haven't been able to find any of the old threads since their website got hacked and they changed to the new forum.
