Karaoke contest benefits Maritime Museum

Belt out your favorite karaoke tune and win prizes at the Mighty Mullet Maritime Festival Karaoke Contest, which benefits the new Big Bend Maritime Museum to be built in Panacea.

The festival takes place Nov. 18 at Woolley Park in Panacea, but the karaoke competition gets started weeks in advance with qualifying rounds on subsequent Thursdays at Hook Wreck Henry's Dockside Cafe & Tiki Bar on Rock Landing Road in Panacea. The first round takes place Oct. 12, with the others scheduled for Oct. 19, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2. The semi-final round takes place Nov. 9.

Here's how it works: Sign-up starts at 7 p.m. each Thursday for those who pony up the $10 entry fee. The competition starts at 8. A maximum of 20 contestants are allowed to compete on a given night. From that talent pool, four contestants - two men and two women - will be chosen to advance to the semi-finals. The field will be whittled down to eight - four women and four men - at the semi-final round.

You must be 17 or older to enter. Contestants will be judged on performance, showmanship and audience response. If the karaoke selections at Hook Wreck Henry's don't have the track you want, you may bring your own.

How 'bout this one...

Drop-Kick Me, Jesus, Through the Goalposts of Life
(Paul Craft)

Drop-kick me, Jesus, through the goalposts of life,
End over end, neither left nor to right.
Straight through the heart of them righteous uprights
Drop-kick me, Jesus, through the goalposts of life.

Make me, Oh make me, Lord, more than I am
Make me a part of your master game plan
Free of the earthly tempestions below
I've got the will, Lord, if you've got the toe.

Bring on the brothers who've gone on before
Bring on the sisters who've knocked on your door.
Bring on those sainted relations of mine
And put them up front in the offensive line.

A lowly benchwarmer I'm contented to be
Until the time that you have need of me
Flash on the big scoreboard that shines up on high
The big Superbowl 'way up in the sky
