Sat 10/7 West Flats

Put in at Shell Island before day and was the first boat out. Got to the fort and looked up the St Marks and it looked like a train of red and green lights. Got to the first bend fore the first one caught us. If he'd been going ten miles an hour slower we coulda reached out and shook hands. Passed us like a freight train passing a tramp ! It was like the first lap at Talledega ! We moved over and let em have the river after this. Can't believe the way some people operate boats.........
Passed the lighthouse shortly after 7 intending to go south a ways and troll some rocks that had been productive. Got to the birdrack and decided that was a bad idea the way the wind and waves were making up.
Decided to run over towards West Flats and try to ride out the wind and low tide till the weather made up its mind what it wanted to do.
As it turned out we spent the rest of the day there. As the tide changed headed up in Goose Creek Bay area. I never have done much fishing for reds so we decided to see what we could find.
Around 1 water started coming back in hard and we were able to get up in the back of the bay. I'd never been back in the area before. Dang sure better be watching your water when you go back there. I'm sure the area is well known to some of our resident forum redfish specialists. In fact one of em may have been one creek over yesterday!
We found some reds and my buddy caught three.. Two were shorts and one about 20". I got a few strikes was all. At one time had them all over us. Didn't have a decent spoon in the boat just a redfish magic. also caught a nice trout over a bar with redfish magic.
Will be stocking up on some more specific redfish tackle before going back.I can see how this redfishing could get contagious.
Around 3 decided to go back out on flats and try to catch some trout to take home.We stayed west and went to an area we had drifted earlier in the day before the low water had run us out. Trout were there now.
Caught a nice double limit in a couple hours of fish up to 19". Also threw back 35-40 shorts. caught them on SWA's, Gulps, and Topwaters. No preference by the fish as to what kind of grub they would hit. One was as good as the other. This was typical October trout fishing. Marked that area for future reference !
At one time we both had a small shark hit a topwater. Water had just gotten choppy enough to fish a topwater good. First time I ever caught a shark on a topwater plus, much less two.
By then it was getting time to go so we headed in. All in all, a very nice day with my main fishing buddy. Temperature and company was great ! The wind wasn't . Probably gonna try it again next week !
